About the Friends

Founded in 1995, Friends of Sapelo (FOS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to supporting research, education, and outreach on Georgia’s iconic Sapelo Island. Sapelo Island is home to the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve, the University of Georgia Marine Institute, and the historic R.J. Reynolds Mansion State Park.

The efforts of the Friends of Sapelo are essential to the success of these programs and to the stewardship of the island itself. We also collaborate with other coastal non-profits to enhance our mission of protecting this invaluable natural resource. With 140 active members, ranging from students to grandparents, the Friends of Sapelo plays a vital role in preserving the island’s unique ecosystems and ensuring accessibility for school groups, families, and the public. Our goal for 2025 is 1200 volunteer hours—valued at over $31,000.

Please join us in our mission. We offer many ways to get involved—on and off the island. Our membership is open to anyone who shares our passion for preserving Sapelo Island. Together, we can ensure this special place thrives for generations to come. Learn more about becoming a member
